I make my living as a software engineer, but I make my life as an artist.
I have always been intrigued by humanity’s attempts to understand and personify the forces of nature. My work with masks developed from an interest in the mythology surrounding the natural world, in particular the elementals and nature spirits embodied by the Green Man. Over time, I have found myself equally fascinated by how little it takes to invoke the expressiveness of humanity from even the most grotesque and fantastical forms.
Strictly speaking, my masks are not masks but portraits of creatures whose own particular stories come to light in the making.
No matter what the nature of the form — mask, bowl, box, or vase — I strive to evoke an empathic rather than intellectual response to my work.
Add to that an interest in the play of light on a three-dimensional form, the varying perspectives of distance, and the endless variety of natural forms, so that ultimately I find inspiration for all my forms in the folds and swirls and plasticity of the clay itself.
Clay is an ancient medium of expression and, for me, the most satisfying. Ultimately, the work contains all the elements of the cosmos – earth, water, fire, and spirit.

Why Rosegate?
What else could I call it?
Rosegate Pottery is a one-person, part-time enterprise. As such, my productivity is limited, but I hope to present more of my work as it is completed.
